Good Use Cases

  • Current events: "What happened in the news today?"
  • Real-time data: "What's the current stock price of Apple?"
  • Recent information: "What are the latest features in React 19?"
  • Fact-checking: "Is this claim accurate?"
  • Research: "Find recent studies about remote work productivity"

When Not Needed

  • Personal tasks using your integrations (Gmail, Calendar, etc.)
  • Working with your saved memory content
  • General knowledge questions
  • Creative writing tasks

Tip: Only enable web search when you need current information. This saves credits and keeps responses focused.

How It Works

When you send a message with web search enabled:

  1. Query formulation: The AI determines what to search for
  2. Web search: Searches multiple sources across the internet
  3. Content retrieval: Fetches relevant content from top results
  4. Synthesis: Combines information into a coherent response
  5. Citation: Includes source links for verification

Understanding Search Results

Sources Panel

Search results include a sources panel showing:

  • Website name and favicon
  • Page title
  • Brief snippet
  • Link to original source

Inline Citations

The AI's response includes numbered citations linking to sources:

Industry experts predict continued growth [2][3] through the next quarter.

Search Quality Tips

1. Be Specific

❌ "Tell me about AI"
✅ "What are the latest developments in AI language models in 2024?"

2. Include Timeframes

"Find news about Tesla from the past week"
"What are the most recent React updates?"

3. Specify Source Types

"Find academic research on climate change"
"Look for news articles about the election"

4. Ask Follow-ups

"Search for more details about the third source"
"Find related articles from the same publication"

Credit Usage

Web search has specific credit costs:

ActionCredits
Web search query2 (tool execution)
Each URL fetched1

A typical search might cost 4-8 credits depending on how many sources are retrieved.

Limitations

  • Rate limits: Very frequent searches may be throttled
  • Paywalled content: Cannot access content behind paywalls
  • Real-time data: Some data may be minutes old
  • Accuracy: Always verify important information from sources
